Caregiver Workshop

For Professionals and Caregivers/Parents
A collaborative project with Yoga Nook and Children First, ABA Clinic

What: A practical, hands on workshop providing information, techniques and strategies for any Professional: teachers, physical therapist, occupational therapist, yoga therapists/teachers, etc., or Caregivers/Parents that would like to learn the benefits and practical use of yoga with exceptional kids. Exceptional kids are children with autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, anxiety, depression, or a lot of creative energy. (Childcare will be provided if needed, please note it is limited)

Objectives:
• Learn research and benefits of using yoga with children
• Learn tools and strategies to use with exceptional children
• Learn how to make a “tool box” to use when working with exceptional kids
• Learn and practice a yoga sequence that can be used with exceptional kids

When: August 4 1-4 (Professionals/Caregivers/Parents only - limited childcare available) and August 5 2-3 (Professionals/Caregivers/Parents and children)

Who: Anyone interested in using the benefits and practical use of yoga to assist exceptional kids

Fearless Heart Women's Retreat

Escape from the busyness of life and embrace a nurturing weekend of yoga, breath work and guided meditation. Rejuvenate with mindful movement and tap into your fearless heart with breath work and meditation.

Connect with other women in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment and draw on the quiet beautiful energy of the Eastern Shore. While on the Bay enjoy peaceful autumn scenery, nature walks and quiet spaces to recharge. Delicious nourishing meals (vegetarian available) and cabin style accommodations are included.

All are welcome regardless of experience level or spiritual path.

Facilities & Accommodations: 
Occohannock on the Bay Camp and Retreat Center is located on 50 acres overlooking the Occohannock and Tawes Creeks and the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. 

Sleeping accommodations are in comfortable, air-conditioned cabins, adjacent to newly renovated bathhouses in a pristine camp setting. 

Each cabin will accommodate 4-6 women.  Guests bring their own bed linens, pillows, and towels.

The main lodge offers a dining room, community space with fireplace, and screened porch. 

Parking is available at the site.

Wi-Fi is available in the Dining Hall but not in cabins.

Cellular service is extremely limited. Emergency contact number 757-442-7836, please leave this number with your point of contact in case someone needs to reach you.  There are three phones with this number:  the nurse’s station, camp office and camp director’s house.

No alcohol, tobacco or drugs are permitted on site.

What to bring:

•      Bed linens for twin size mattress, pillow, blanket or sleeping bag

•      Bath towel, toiletries

•      Sunscreen, bug spray

•      Beach towel, bathing suit, hats for shade

•      Yoga mat, any props you require (straps, blocks, meditation cushion /floor chair)

•      Flashlight

•      Comfortable clothing for yoga and hiking

•      Rain protection in case of bad weather

•      Sneakers, water shoes

•      Journal and pen

The drive to the camp from the main highway (Rt. 13 North or South) twists and turns through a variety of paved, scenic back roads.

Turn left (from the South) or right (from the North) on Route 178 at the Exxon Gas Station (traffic light). Go 1 mile, turn left on Route 178 at Phillips Hardware (small gas station/grocery store); Go 2.6 miles, turn left on to Route 613, Indian Trail Road. Go 1.4 miles to stop sign. Cross Craddockville Road and continue on Route 613. Go 1 mile and turn right on Route 612 (Scarsborough Neck Road). Go 0.6 miles; turn left on Route 611 (Occohannock Road). Road curves 1.1 miles to the Camp sign. Turn right onto Camp Lane and enter the camp.

Look for the Camp Occohannock signs with arrows beginning at the Town of Exmore, the Exxon Gas Station. The sign has the United Methodist Cross & Flame and the name of the camp.

Before September 1, 2018, a refund is available minus $50 administrative fees.

After September 1, 2018, a refund (minus $50 administrative fees) may be possible if we are able to fill your space with another retreatant.

If you choose to leave the retreat early, no refunds are available.

5 ELEMENTS YIN YOGA IMMERSION/TEACHER TRAINING

The 5 Elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal) Yin Yoga course is open to anyone who is new or experienced in Yin yoga and yoga teacher or someone who has an interest in Yin Yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Daoist philosophy (Yin/Yang). In this Yin Yoga Immersion/Teacher Training, you will integrate the foundations of Yin Yoga Philosophy, Anatomy, Chinese Meridian Theory, and the 5 Elements Theory to learn how to safely and effectively practice and/or teach Yin Yoga. The program will emphasize the healing and meditative aspects of Yin Yoga, as well as the practice of equanimity and loving kindness.

Investment:

Immersion Option (4 modules)  –  for Yin Yoga Practitioners who want to deepen their knowledge in Yin Yoga and its origin – the 5 elements and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each module will focus on the key principles of each element. You will also learn how to apply Yin yoga to balance 5 elements for a harmonious life style.

Investment: $300 Early Bird by Sep 1st, $350 Full Price, or $90 Single Module purchased separately. No previous Yin yoga practice required. This is open to EVERYONE.

Muning was first introduced to Yoga when she was 15. What inspires Muning the most is the journey of self-realization and the spiritual connection to the true self. She became a lifetime student to Yoga ever since and is still feeling grateful for every learning experience around her and many study opportunities in India. She spent extensive time in both India and China learning and absorbing the Science of Easter Medicine.

Muning’s teaching is inspired by integrating tools from different styles and approaches in order to customize classes and teacher trainings for her students. Muning believes every student is an individual who have different bodies and need different approaches to yoga. Muning’s goal as a teacher is to inspire her students to find their balanced life, happiness and inner peace both on their mats and off the mats through the practice of yoga. Currently, Muning offers Hatha practices, private sessions and group classes, Yin yoga workshops, teacher training programs and is a registered YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continue Education Provider).

Chair yoga can help you teach yoga therapeutically, grow you as a teacher and make you more profitable. Since 2014, Yoga Nook has offered chair yoga and our program is thriving. We know how important this special modality of yoga is. Learn the skills and knowledge to help you become an amazing chair yoga teacher! 

You will learn:

  • Why teaching chair yoga is so important for your future students
    and for you to grow as a teacher
  • A review of anatomy with emphasis on our bodies as we age and what is affected
  • Key Elements of Chair Yoga
  • Mindfulness and breathing techniques specialized for the aging population
  • How to sequence a class
  • Modifications and adjustments with props
  • Putting it all into practice, practice teaching your own sequence to the group

Teachers:

Alex is the director of Yoga Nook. She is an ERYT-200 and has over 2500 hours of teaching experience. In addition to the many classes she teaches at the Nook, she also teaches therapeutic yoga to children and adults with special needs.

Natasha has 500 hours of training, 300 hours in therapeutic yoga and over 3500 hours of teaching experience.  She has been teaching several different styles of yoga in the Hampton Roads community since 2008. Since 2016, her focus has been Chair Yoga and teaching therapeutically.

What: A 2 hour social experience for exceptional teens.  Participants will participate in a group yoga class followed by snacks and social opportunities in a safe and supportive environment.

Getting Down with Your Upside, Inversions Workshop

This inversion workshop will focus on finding your roots and growing your practice from the ground up. Integrating the proper engagement, alignment, and safety will lead to successfully defying gravity. We will explore techniques to strengthen, build confidence, and integrate inversions into your daily yoga practice.  Participants will work together providing safety and support while moving through the poses.  With continued practice and patience, the fundamentals from this workshop will empower your journey to comfortably practice Inversions.

Some yoga experience suggested but not required.

Most people are capable of basic inversions and arm balances; however, People with neck injuries, eye conditions like glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart or back conditions should consult a physician before starting an inversion practice.

John & Marissa are 200 hour yoga teachers and Acro Revolution certified teachers. They have been practicing yoga for 7 years and acroyoga for 4 years. They regularly study and attend trainings to increase their skill sets and they enjoy sharing knowledge with the local community. Yoga Nook is their home studio.

Who: 6-10 year olds with exceptional needs including, but not limited to: autism, down syndrome, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety or a lot of energy meeting program requirements

When: Thursday, April 12, 19, 26, and May 3 from 3:30-4:30 PM

Like our asana, pranayama, and meditation practices laughing yoga is just another practice.

Green Tea & Yoga

Join us at Yoga Nook for a relaxing restorative yoga session and an informative discussion about the origins and healing benefits of green tea at the Green Tea & Yoga Workshop! 

The presentation will be lead by Aidan Bergfeld, a 200 hour certified yoga teacher, tea enthusiast, and aspiring herbalist who has been working in the tea industry for over 2 years.

In this workshop we will be discussing the history, benefits, and processes involved in making green tea as well as how to incorporate tea into your daily yoga practice.Bring your favorite tea cup or mug as we will be sampling 6 different types of green tea!
